French for Travellers
It is perfect for first time learners or to prepare for a trip overseas. At the end of the course, students should be able to speak clearly and be understood in basic French in a travel setting. Students should also be able to demonstrate the skills, language and attitudes required for further study of French. No prior knowledge of French is required. Students will learn the very basics of the French language and have the opportunity to put their learning into practice through facilitated conversation.
Required resources: BBC Talk French 1 textbook/CD set. Available for purchase from the AFT. We
aim to complete the course at the end of 12 hours of classes, plus additional study at home.

New Beginners A1.1 - Vite et Bien 1 - Units 1-4
This is a new beginner class. It is ideal for first time learners of French or as a transition course after completing French for Travellers. Students will learn more specific vocabulary for food and wine, speaking on the telephone, daily life in France and travel. French grammar points will include: the present tense with ‘avoir’, ‘être’ and regular verbs, indefinite and definite articles, asking questions, telling the time, adjectives, dates and numbers.
This class has a particular focus on listening and speaking.
Required resources: Vite et Bien 1 (2nd edition) an all-inclusive textbook and activity book with audio CD and answer booklet. This textbook will be used for all level 1 classes. (Available for purchase from the AFT).

CONTINUING BEGINNERS A1.2 Term 1 2026
This is a continuation of the New Beginners' course started in Term 4, 2025. Students will learn more specific vocabulary for
making enquiries at the library or the bank; talking about expecting a baby, maternity leave, health, human relationships and clothes. French
grammar points will include: modal verbs, reflexive verbs, the immediate future, the imperative (commands), pronouns and an introduction to
the PAST tense.
Required resources: Vite et Bien 1 (2nd edition) an all-inclusive textbook and activity book with audio CD and answer booklet. This textbook will be used for all level 1 classes. (Available for purchase from the AFT).

ELEMENTARY A2.1 - Term 1 2026
This course follows on from Continuing Beginners A1.3 level from Term 4, 2025 and is for any student wishing to learn the language for business, travel or everyday use. Students will develop skills to use in conversation, reading, listening and writing. This course aims to build general comprehension and communication skills in more advanced French. Grammar points will include further development of verb tenses (present, perfect and future), personal pronouns, verbs & prepositions. .
Required resources: Vite et Bien 1 (2nd edition) an all-inclusive textbook and activity book with audio CD and answer booklet. Available for purchase from the AFT. This textbook covers levels A1 & A2.

ELEMENTARY A2.2 Term 1 2026
This course is a continuation from Elementary A2 level from Term 4, 2025 and is for any student wishing to learn the language for business, travel or everyday use. Students will develop skills to use in conversation, reading, listening and writing. This course aims to build general comprehension and communication skills in more advanced French. Grammar points will include further development of verb tenses (present, perfect and imperfect). This course should take you to the completion of Vite et Bien 1 (units 19 & 20) and should move on to Vite et Bien 2, opening units before the end of this term.
Required resources: Vite et Bien 1 (2nd edition) an all-inclusive textbook and activity book with audio CD and answer booklet. Available for purchase from the AFT. This textbook covers levels A1 & A2. Vite et Bien 2 (2nd edition) required midway through this term.

INTERMEDIATE B1 - Term 1 2026
This course is a continuation from Intermediate level B1 from Term 4, 2025 and is for any student wishing to learn the language for
business, travel or everyday use. Students will develop skills to use in conversation, reading, listening and writing. We will continue with
Vite et Bien 2 at B1 level, though probably at a pace of only two units per term.
This course aims to build general comprehension and communication skills in more advanced French. Grammar points will include further
refinement of verb tenses (present, perfect (including agreement of the past participle and the imperfect) and more pronouns.
Required resources: Vite et Bien 2 (2nd edition) an all-inclusive textbook and activity book with audio CD and answer booklet. Available for purchase from the AFT. This textbook covers level B1.

INTERMEDIATE B2 Term 1 2026
Each class will be based on a theme related to French society, cultural practices and politics. Lesson content will be based on a variety of resources including newspaper articles, songs, plays, and online media. This course aims to further consolidate comprehension and communication skills in more advanced French through discussion, reading and listening activities.
Required resources: Resources will be supplied for each lesson (and there may be a small surcharge to cover resources, rather than a textbook)
